Anyone can spell a name out in the grass. What makes people pull over and take a picture is the stuff around it.
Here's what we've learned works — organized by who you're celebrating.
For the Little Ones (Ages 1–5)
- The giant number. For a first birthday, make the "1" the hero. Oversized, centered, everything else built around it. It photographs beautifully and it's the shot that ends up framed.
- Dinosaur takeover. Consistently our most requested theme for boys ages 2–6. Works because the dinosaurs are big enough to read from the road.
- Construction zone. Trucks, cones, and caution-tape flair. Kids who love diggers really love diggers.
- Unicorns and rainbows. Still undefeated. Pastel flair, lots of stars.
- Farm animals. Underrated. Great for a second or third birthday, and it photographs sweetly.
For Kids (Ages 6–12)
- Their exact obsession. Not "sports" — their sport, in their team's colors. Specificity is everything at this age.
- Video game theme. Ask them what they're playing this month and build around it. It changes fast.
- Mermaid / under the sea. Naturally on-brand for a shore town, and the flair is gorgeous.
- Superhero. Bold colors, action-star flair, name in giant block letters.
- Emoji explosion. Loud, funny, and reads instantly from a moving car.
For Teens (13–19)
- Sweet sixteen with the big 16. Number front and center, flair kept clean and modern. Teens want it to look good in a photo, not childish.
- Their color palette, not a theme. Teens tend to prefer a coordinated look — black and gold, sage and cream — over a cartoon theme. Ask them.
- Inside-joke signs. A custom accent sign with something only their friends would understand. This is the one they'll actually post.
- Driver's license year. A "17" display the week they pass the road test hits differently.
For Adults
- Milestone numbers, unapologetically large. 30, 40, 50, 60. The bigger the number, the funnier it is. Lean in.
- The roast display. Witty flair — "Officially Ancient," "Still Got It" — turns a birthday into a gift you give at someone. Extremely popular with friend groups.
- Wine and cheers theme. Elegant, adult, and photographs well for social.
- Tropical / beach theme. Especially good on LBI, where it just looks correct.
- Golf, fishing, boating. Whatever their thing is. A display built around a real hobby beats a generic one every time.
- The surprise 90th. Our favorite category, honestly. Grandkids book these, and the reaction videos are something else.
Three Things That Make Any Display Better
Usually set up the night before
The magic is walking outside and finding it. Night before, or first thing in the morning before anyone's up — either works. A display that goes up while everyone watches is just decoration. The only rule is that they don't see it coming.
Angle it toward the road
Most people place a display facing the house. Face it toward the street and it reads to every car, every neighbor, every school bus.
Go one size bigger than feels reasonable
Nobody has ever told us the display was too big. Plenty of people wish they'd gone bigger.
